about
I have always been drawn to abstract painting. I relish the challenge of trying to interpret abstract works. I also love the beauty inherent in a work which on the surface does not appear to represent anything specific.
And I am fascinated by rocks - their texture, their formation and evolution. Rocks are built up through a sedimentary process and they erode from the effects of wind and water.
My art is all about marrying abstraction with everything that I see and sense in landscapes in which rocks form the major component.
My approach is through drawing. I draw, and keep re-drawing, my real life subject, abstracting a little further at each stage. The final abstracted drawing forms the basis for my painting. My aim is to capture what I see as sense of the sedimentation and erosion that the rocks have undergone. I use a limited colour range in each painting to keep the work fresh and light.
I hope that my paintings communicate my passion for my subject and engage the viewer with the same enthusiasm with which I approached the painting. At the same time, I aim for my work to be attractive on a purely aesthetic level.
For each subject I normally aim to produce a large series of works to form a coherent body of work. In recent years I have painted series on part of North Curl Curl headland, rocks near Dee Why rockpool, Crater Lake in South Oregon, all the headlands between Collaroy and Avalon, the rock backdrop to Mermaid Pool at Manly Dam, Snæfellsjökull in Iceland. All of these series have been shown in exhibitions.
I am a member, past President, and current Treasurer, of an art collective, Art & Soul Collective Inc, on Sydney's Northern Beaches.
